26North closes acquisition of AI communications firm Intermedia
What's the deal? 26North Partners has completed its acquisition of Intermedia Intelligent Communications, a Sunnyvale-based provider of AI-powered cloud communications, collaboration, and customer engagement solutions. The deal, previously disclosed, transfers ownership from funds managed by Madison Dearborn Partners.
Intermedia serves more than 150,000 business customers and works with over 7,500 channel partners. Its platform spans voice, video conferencing, chat, SMS, contact centre, email, file sharing, and more.
Why now? Intermedia has been leaning heavily into AI-driven features and a partner-first distribution model — two areas attracting significant investor interest. "The company combines a broad communications portfolio, deep partner relationships, and a practical approach to AI innovation in a way that continues to differentiate it in the market," said Tyler Sipprelle, 26North private equity partner.
With 26North's backing, Intermedia plans to accelerate AI innovation, expand internationally, push deeper into vertical markets, and pursue strategic acquisitions.
What could go wrong? The unified communications space is fiercely competitive, with major players like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and RingCentral commanding huge market share. Integrating AI features in a way that genuinely differentiates — rather than just checking a box — will be the real test. New ownership transitions can also disrupt partner and customer relationships, which are central to Intermedia's model.
