MoonPay acquires AI trading lab Dawn to power plain-English trade execution

What's the deal? MoonPay, the crypto payments infrastructure company, has acquired Dawn LabsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an applied research lab building AI tools for financial markets. The deal brings Dawn's full team into MoonPay, with founder Neeraj Prasad becoming chief engineer of a new unit called MoonPay Labs.

The centrepiece is Dawn CLI, a tool that lets users describe trading strategies in plain English. The system then automates research, code generation, backtesting, and live trade execution across supported venues.

Why now? Prediction markets are booming. Platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi have attracted a new wave of active traders who rely on social media signals, automated strategies, and cross-platform positioning. But the infrastructure to build and deploy those strategies remains fragmented and technically demanding.

Dawn CLI aims to collapse what previously required expertise in research, software development, and portfolio management into a single AI-driven workflow. "Competing effectively has required expertise across multiple disciplines at once," Prasad said. "Dawn brings those capabilities into a single autonomous system."

The acquisition also fits MoonPay's broader pivot toward AI-native infrastructure. Over the past year it has launched MoonPay CLI, AI agent tools with Ledger-secured hardware signing, and MoonAgents Card — a virtual Mastercard debit card that lets users and AI agents spend stablecoins anywhere Mastercard is accepted online.

What could go wrong? Letting AI agents autonomously execute trades based on natural-language prompts introduces real risk. Strategies that backtest well can fail in live markets, and the gap between a plain-English description and actual market conditions could lead to unexpected losses — especially for less sophisticated users drawn in by the tool's accessibility.

Regulatory scrutiny is another concern. Automated trading tools that lower the barrier to entry tend to attract attention from financial regulators, particularly when prediction markets themselves are still navigating uncertain legal terrain.

The signal: With Polymarket already at late growth stage and prediction markets surging, the infrastructure layer powering these platforms is becoming a competitive battleground. MoonPay's acquisition of Dawn Labs — still at early growth — suggests the company is betting it can define the AI-to-execution stack before the category matures, embedding itself as the default rails between natural-language intent and live market activity.
