SABSEG acquires Madrid brokerage PQI in Iberian expansion push
What's the deal? Portuguese insurance group SABSEG has acquired Premium Quality Investment (PQI), a Madrid-based insurance brokerage with more than 20 years in the market. PQI manages over €13M in intermediated premiums and serves a portfolio of more than 5,600 clients — mostly SMEs and mid-market companies.
Spanish law firm EJASO advised PQI throughout the sale process. The M&A team was led by partner Enrique A. González Iglesias, supported by Blanca Monteoliva Pereira and Matilda Filgueira.
Why now? SABSEG is in active expansion mode across the Iberian Peninsula. Acquiring an established brokerage with a solid SME client base gives it an immediate foothold in the Spanish market, where mid-market insurance distribution remains fragmented.
What could go wrong? Cross-border integration in insurance is notoriously tricky. Regulatory differences between Portugal and Spain, plus the challenge of retaining PQI's client relationships under new ownership, could slow the expected synergies.
The signal: Consolidation in Iberian insurance brokerage is accelerating. Larger groups are snapping up smaller, well-established brokerages to gain scale, client portfolios, and geographic reach — a trend likely to intensify as the sector digitises and margins tighten.
