BYD invests in Passini Perception to bring tactile sensing to EV production lines
What's the deal? BYD, China's largest electric vehicle maker, has made a strategic investment of more than ¥100M (roughly $14M) in Pasin Perception Technology, a Shenzhen-based startup specialising in robotic tactile sensors. The deal, revealed through a change in Pasin Perception's shareholder registry, gives BYD an equity stake in the company.
Founded in 2021, Pasin Perception develops 6D Hall array tactile sensors, dexterous robotic hands, and humanoid robot bodies. It has previously raised multiple rounds and counts JD.com among its industrial partners.
Why now? While robots can see and move, touch remains a weak link. Traditional industrial robots handle repetitive tasks well but struggle with complex assembly, irregular parts, and flexible materials — all common on EV production lines that demand extreme precision and speed.
BYD's factories are among the most automated in China. Adding tactile sensing to robotic end-effectors could let machines detect contact force, surface texture, and slip in real time — capabilities closer to a human hand. For BYD, this isn't a moonshot bet; it is a practical technology reserve for parts manufacturing, logistics handling, and flexible assembly.
