Board raises $20M Series A led by Union Square Ventures

What's the deal? BoardDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a New York-based startup that makes a face-to-face game console, has raised a $20M Series A led by Union Square Ventures. The round marks the first investment by USV general partner Michael Mignano since joining the firm; he will take a board seat.

Founded in 2023 by Brynn Putnam — who previously built Mirror, later acquired by Lululemon — Board centres on a shared 24-inch touchscreen with proprietary PieceSense technology that recognises physical game pieces. The device blends the tactile feel of board games with video-game interactivity.

USV joins a roster of existing backers including AdjacentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, BoxGroup, First Round Capital, Lerer Hippeau, and SV Angel. New angel investors include Biz Stone, Evan Sharp, Kayvon Beykpour, Scott Belsky, and Tim Ferriss.

Why now? Since launching in October 2025, Board has landed in tens of thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, and restaurants across all 50 US states. The company says 85% of customers play an average of 30-plus sessions per month.

The fresh capital will fund a pivot from pure gaming hardware to a broader creator platform. Board plans to launch Board Studio later in 2026 — an AI-powered tool that lets families, educators, and developers go from idea to playable prototype in under an hour using natural-language prompts. Thousands have already downloaded Board's SDKs, and the first community-built game is set to launch in July 2026.

Board will also expand its own library to 25-plus original titles by year-end and move into accessories and collectible game pieces.

What could go wrong? Hardware startups face steep challenges: margins are thin, supply chains are complex, and consumer electronics categories are notoriously hard to create from scratch. Sustaining engagement beyond early adopters — and convincing a broad creator community to build for a single proprietary device — will be critical tests.

The signal: This round marks Union Square Ventures general partner Michael Mignano's debut investment at the firm, signalling USV's conviction that shared physical surfaces — not just screens — can anchor the next wave of creator platforms. Board's early-growth stage and rapid household penetration suggest demand for what Putnam calls "together tech," but the real test will be whether Board Studio can spark a self-sustaining content flywheel on proprietary hardware — a trick few consumer device makers have pulled off outside of gaming giants.
