Salesforce acquires Contentful, the Berlin-born headless CMS

The deal: Salesforce announced on 1 June 2026 that it is acquiring Contentful, the Berlin-founded headless content management platform. According to The Information, Salesforce paid between $1 billion and $1.5 billion for Contentful — a steep discount from the $3 billion valuation that Contentful revealed after its $175 million Series F led by Tiger Global in July 2021. The company had raised $333.5 million in total funding.

The backstory: Contentful was founded in 2013 by Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri (originally as StorageRoom in 2012). The company pioneered the "headless CMS" category — decoupling content from presentation to let developers deliver across any channel via API. Early backers included Point Nine Capital and Balderton Capital, who co-led the first financing round following a cold email from the founder. Later rounds brought in Benchmark, General Catalyst, and Sapphire Ventures. Notably, Salesforce Ventures had been an investor since the Series D in 2018.

Why it matters: The acquisition fits Salesforce's broader strategy of building AI-ready enterprise infrastructure. Contentful's structured content platform — used by brands like Spotify, Vodafone, and Urban Outfitters — provides the kind of trusted, well-organised content that AI agents need to operate effectively. It deepens Salesforce's content and commerce capabilities alongside its Agentforce AI platform.

European angle: Contentful is one of Berlin's most successful enterprise software exports, growing from a two-person startup to over 1,000 employees. The deal marks another major European SaaS exit to a US acquirer.
