Cars24 launches AI Labs with $20M fund for early-stage AI startups

What's the deal? Cars24, India's pre-owned car marketplace, has launched AI Labs — a dedicated initiative to build AI-native products and back early-stage entrepreneurs. The company is putting $20M into a fund targeting startups and dev teams working on transformative AI technologies.

AI Labs will operate across three tracks: building proprietary AI applications, partnering with established AI firms, and investing seed capital in early-stage software companies.

To power the programme, Cars24 has partnered with OpenAI, Amazon Web ServicesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (AWS), and ElevenLabs. Participating developers will get access to cloud infrastructure, distribution networks, and advanced language and voice synthesis models.

Beyond equity investments, the initiative will fund regional hackathons, builder incubation programmes, and open-source projects.

Why now? Cars24 has already woven machine learning and AI into its core operations — from decision-making workflows to customer-facing interfaces. AI Labs extends that internal capability outward to independent engineers and founders.

"Every major technology shift creates a handful of companies that go on to define the future," said Vikram Chopra, founder and chief executive officer of Cars24. "AI is the biggest shift of our generation. We want to back founders early, help them move faster, and support the people building things that seem impossible today but inevitable tomorrow."

What could go wrong? Cars24 is a used-car platform — not a venture fund or AI research lab. Running a credible investment programme alongside a core business in a different domain is no small feat. The $20M commitment, while meaningful, is modest by venture standards, which could limit its ability to attract top-tier AI talent competing for capital from dedicated deep-tech investors.

There's also the question of focus. Corporate venture arms have a mixed track record; strategic priorities can shift, and portfolio companies may find themselves orphaned if the parent business hits turbulence.

The signal: Cars24 is classified as a late-growth company on Dealroom, making its pivot toward running an external investment programme a notable strategic bet — using corporate capital to build an ecosystem rather than chasing another mega-round. The $20M fund is modest, but the real draw for early-stage founders may be the distribution network and operational data of a scaled consumer marketplace, an asset pure-play venture funds can't offer.
