Long Lake buys Amex GBT for $6.3B to build an AI-powered corporate travel giant

What's the deal? AI-focused acquirerLong Lake has agreed to buy American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT), the world's largest corporate travel platform, for $6.3 billion in cash — $9.50 per share, a 65% premium to Amex GBT's 30-day average stock price. General Catalyst and Alpha Waveare among Long Lake's backers. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory and shareholder approval.

Why now? Corporate travel is a late but ripe target for AI transformation: booking, disruption management, and expense administration are all labour-intensive processes that AI agents can automate. Long Lake, founded in 2023, has built its entire model around acquiring services businesses and running them through its Nexus AI platform. Amex GBT, with travel professionals in more than 140 countries and relationships with major suppliers, gives it the largest possible canvas.

What could go wrong? At $6.3 billion, Long Lake is paying a steep premium for a business that still runs on a combination of software and human agents. If AI-native travel startups move faster, or if corporate travel demand softens — due to videoconferencing adoption or economic headwinds — the deal economics get harder to justify. Integration risk is also real: Amex GBT only recently absorbed rival CWT, and layering an AI transformation on top of an unfinished merger is complex.

The signal: The deal is a signal that AI consolidation has moved well beyond software into large, people-heavy services businesses. Long Lake's playbook — buy a market leader, automate from within — is a template others will follow. That shareholders including American Express, Expedia, Qatar Investment Authority, and BlackRock, collectively holding 69% of shares, have already signed voting agreements suggests confidence the premium is fair. The deeper bet is that the travel agent of the future is a hybrid of AI and human, and that the incumbent with the most data and supplier relationships wins.
