Fundraise

Upscale AI seeks $200M at $2B valuation — its third raise in seven months

What's the deal? Upscale AI, a Santa Clara-based AI infrastructure startup, is in talks to raise between $180M and $200M at a valuation of around $2B, according to people familiar with the matter.

If completed, it would be the company's third funding event in just seven months — following a $100M seed round in September 2025 and a $200M Series A in January 2026 led by Tiger Global Management, Premji Invest, and Xora InnovationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The company spun out of Velaura AI (formerly Auradine), a Bitcoin mining chip designer that pivoted to AI compute silicon in March 2026. Upscale is building the infrastructure layer for AI data centres: custom chips, networking equipment, and software to help computing clusters communicate and operate more efficiently. It has not yet released a product, with a launch planned for later in 2026.

Why now? Demand for AI compute infrastructure is intense, and the bottleneck is shifting from raw processing power to how efficiently clusters of chips can talk to each other. Upscale is betting on a full-stack approach and open standards — a direct challenge to proprietary networking solutions from established players like Cisco, Broadcom, and Arista Networks.

The timing also reflects a broader race for position in AI infrastructure. Competitor Nexthop AI hit a $4.2B valuation in March 2026Dealroom has a profile for this one. What could go wrong? Upscale has yet to release a product, which makes a $2B valuation a substantial bet on execution. Custom silicon and networking infrastructure are notoriously hard to build and even harder to sell into enterprise data centres — sales cycles are long, switching costs are high, and the incumbents are well-entrenched.

The pace of fundraising is also striking — three rounds in seven months raises questions about capital efficiency and whether the company is raising ahead of milestones or because it needs to. The talks are ongoing and the details could yet change.

The signal: Upscale's trajectory reflects a pattern that has become familiar in the AI infrastructure boom: raise large, raise fast, and establish valuation anchors before competitors do. The underlying thesis — that AI data centre networking is broken and needs a clean-sheet redesign — is credible, but the window to win may be shorter than the fundraising pace suggests, as hyperscalers and incumbents are moving quickly to adapt.

The fact that this would be Upscale's third raise since September 2025 also points to how capital-intensive the hardware layer of AI has become — a dynamic that favours well-funded incumbents as much as nimble startups.
