Fundraise

Periodic Labs eyes $7B valuation, fivefold jump in six months

What's the deal? Periodic Labs, a San Francisco-based AI startup founded in May 2025 by former OpenAI vice president of research Liam FedusDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and ex-Google DeepMind scientist Ekin Dogus CubukDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, is in early talks to raise hundreds of millions of dollars at a $7B valuation, according to Bloomberg.

The round would mark a dramatic leap from its $1.3B seed valuation in September 2025, when it raised $300M from Andreessen Horowitz, Felicis, and Accel.

Why now? The timing tracks with surging investor appetite for foundational AI bets. Periodic Labs already has paying customers in the semiconductor industry — a rare edge in a space crowded with pre-revenue research plays.

The founders bring serious pedigree. Fedus helped build ChatGPT and founded materials science research groups at Google Brain and DeepMind. That credibility, combined with early commercial traction, makes the fundraise a compelling pitch.

What could go wrong? Talks are still early and terms could shift. A jump from $1.3B to $7B in under a year is a large bet on a startup that has yet to prove its model at scale.

Materials science is also a notoriously slow field. Translating AI-driven discovery into commercial products takes time — and capital. If customer traction stalls or timelines slip, the $7B price tag may prove hard to defend.

The signal: Periodic Labs sits at the intersection of two hot investment theses: foundational AI and lab automation. The company is part of a growing wave of so-called "neolabs" — startups combining AI models with physical robotic experimentation to compress scientific discovery cycles.

It is not alone. Fei-Fei LiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → raised $1B for World Labs and Yann LeCunDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → secured $1.03B for AMI Labs. Investors are increasingly backing researchers who want to build beyond large language models — and Periodic Labs, with its focus on materials science, may be the most commercially grounded of the lot.
