Yann LeCun, a French-US computer scientist, is a seminal figure in modern AI, often referred to as one of its "godfathers." He is widely recognized for his pioneering work in deep learning and for inventing the convolutional neural network (CNN), a foundational technology for image, video, and speech recognition. In 2018, alongside Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, he received the ACM A.M. Turing Award for their breakthroughs in deep neural networks. LeCun joined Meta (then Facebook) in 2013 to establish and lead its AI research division, FAIR (Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research). His career also includes significant tenures at AT&T Bell Laboratories and as a professor at New York University.

The startup's direction is informed by LeCun's skepticism of large language models (LLMs) as the sole path to achieving human-level or super-human intelligence. Instead, the venture will explore and build upon the concept of world models, which aim to provide AI with a deeper, more causal understanding of the world, akin to common sense reasoning. The company plans to operate in stealth mode while developing its foundational technology.
