Zeron raises $175M to lead China's electric heavy truck charge
What's the deal? Chinese electric heavy truck startup Zeron has closed a 1.2 billion yuan ($175M) funding round co-led by CATL-affiliated Puquan CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Nio CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and autonomous driving company Momenta.
Founded in 2022 and based in Taicang, Jiangsu, the company plans to use the proceeds to advance end-to-end autonomous driving technology and achieve regular driverless operations by Q2 2026.
Why now? The raise comes just six months after Zeron's 500 million yuan Series A. Momentum is building fast: second-half 2025 sales surged nearly 300% sequentially, with cumulative deliveries of its two flagship models approaching 1,600 units by year-end. The company has set a target of 5,000 trucks in 2026 — the threshold its founder says will get it to break-even.
China's broader market is accelerating in tandem. In December, new energy heavy-duty trucks crossed 50% market penetration for the first time, with 45,300 units sold. CATL chairman Robin ZengDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has predicted electrification in the sector could hit 50% within three years.
What could go wrong? Zeron is a 300-person team taking on entrenched commercial vehicle manufacturers with deep production scale. Its vertical integration strategy — building its own chassis, integrated frame, and autonomous driving stack — is capital-intensive and operationally complex. The path from 1,600 cumulative units to 5,000 in a single year is steep, and any slip in its autonomous driving timeline could undercut its core differentiation.
The signal: Heavy trucks are emerging as a new frontier in China's EV race, attracting the same tier-one backers — CATL, Nio, Momenta — that shaped the passenger car market.
Zeron's pitch, vertical integration of hardware and software to enable high-level autonomy, mirrors the Tesla playbook, applied to logistics. With freight electrification accelerating and deep-pocketed investors circling, the commercial vehicle segment looks set to replay the passenger EV story at speed.
