Nexthop AI raises $500M Series B at $4.2B valuation to rewire AI data centres

What's the deal? Nexthop AI, a Santa Clara-based maker of networking hardware and software for AI data centres, has raised a $500 million Series B at a $4.2 billion valuation.

The oversubscribed round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with Andreessen Horowitz joining as a major new investor alongside existing backers Altimeter Capital and Kleiner Perkins.

Alongside the funding, Nexthop launched three new network switches designed for the scale-out and scale-across demands of large AI clusters.

Nexthop was founded in 2024 by Anshul SadanaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, formerly chief operating officer at Arista Networks, one of the dominant players in data centre networking. Its systems are built to move more data at lower latency and with less power than incumbent solutions, and the company co-develops them directly with hyperscalers to fit their specific requirements.

Why now? The timing is driven by the scale of AI infrastructure investment underway. The largest data centre operators — Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft — are expected to spend around $650 billion on AI data centres and related infrastructure in 2026 alone.

As AI clusters grow to encompass millions of GPUs, the network connecting them has become a critical bottleneck, and one that Nexthop argues the incumbents — Cisco, Arista, and Hewlett Packard EnterpriseDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — are not moving fast enough to solve.

What could go wrong? The AI infrastructure build-out is enormous, but it is not guaranteed to continue at the current pace. If demand for AI computing plateaus, or if data centre expansion is constrained by power availability or memory, spending could slow sharply.

Sadana acknowledges this directly: "There will be corrections, which every company should be prepared for," he said. Nexthop also competes in a market that is attracting increasing numbers of well-funded startups, including Eridu, which emerged from stealth the same day with $230 million in funding targeting the same problem.

The signal: Two large AI networking rounds on the same day — Nexthop's $500 million and Eridu's $230 million — underlines how seriously investors now view the networking layer as the next major battleground in AI infrastructure.

With the AI networking market projected to reach $100 billion by 2031, capital is flowing fast to anyone with credible hyperscaler relationships and the engineering depth to deliver.

Sadana's background at Arista, and Nexthop's co-development model with the world's largest operators, gives it a structural advantage that pure-play startups will find hard to replicate quickly.
