Heron Power raises $140M to scale solid-state transformers for an overstretched grid

What's the deal? Heron Power has raised $140 million in a Series B round to scale production of next-generation electrical transformers for modernising the power grid. The round was co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Breakthrough Energy VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

Founded by former Tesla executive Drew Baglino, the company is developing solid-state transformers designed to handle renewables, electric vehicles, and rising electricity demand. Heron said the capital will fund manufacturing and deployment as utilities upgrade ageing infrastructure.

Why now? Power grids are under strain from electrification, clean energy growth, and surging demand from AI data centres. Transformers have become a bottleneck due to long lead times, limited supply, and slow grid expansion.

Investors are backing hardware firms that promise faster, more flexible upgrades as governments and utilities race to add capacity.

What could go wrong? Grid projects are regulated, capital-intensive, and defined by long procurement cycles. Scaling advanced hardware manufacturing adds risk, and new systems must prove reliability and cost competitiveness against traditional equipment.

Heron’s success will depend on execution as much as engineering.

The signal: Climate investors are moving deeper into hard infrastructure as the grid becomes the limiting factor for electrification. Transformers are a critical choke point in the transition.

Heron’s raise underscores rising venture appetite for companies tackling the physical constraints of the energy system.
