Hydryx Secures €2.5 Million to Unlock Hidden Climate Potential

Amsterdam-based climate-tech company Hydryx announced the closing of a €2.5 million seed round aimed at accelerating its expansion across Europe and tackling an often-overlooked source of greenhouse-gas emissions: landfill methane. hydryx.eu

The startup, founded by Anthonie Jacobson (CEO) and Joren Tangelder (COO), focuses on a pragmatic intervention. Landfills generate vast volumes of methane—a gas 86 times more potent than CO₂ in terms of warming potential—yet that untapped energy resource remains largely wasted. By installing their system onto existing landfill infrastructure, Hydryx captures methane before it escapes into the atmosphere and converts it into renewable electricity, heat or natural gas.

Their approach, vetted in partnership with Dutch waste-management firm Renewi, yielded a notable early result: Hydryx’s system increased green-energy output from a landfill by some 40 percent.

The seed round was led by impact investor Marcel Smits and the VC fund Graduate Entrepreneur, ably supported by a consortium of mission-driven angel investors. Smits commented that “Hydryx has the biggest ‘bang for your buck’ climate solution that I have seen.”

Hydryx characterises its mission in clear terms: to turn what has historically been a liability—landfills and their methane emissions—into an asset: a distributed source of green energy that is both scalable and profitable. With this fresh investment in hand, the company is positioned to deploy its technology across European landfills, unlocking a long-ignored climate opportunity.

In short, through this round of financing Hydryx is not only signalling confidence in its technical model, but also shifting the narrative: waste sites aren’t just endings for consumption—they could become beginnings of clean-energy production.
