Proofpoint expands Microsoft 365 coverage with Hornetsecurity acquisition
Proofpoint announced on May 15, 2025 that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hornetsecurity, the Germany-based specialist in AI-driven Microsoft 365 security, backup, compliance and security-awareness services. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, was framed as a strategic move to extend Proofpoint’s human-centric security footprint into managed-service providers (MSPs) and the small-to-mid-market segment. At the time of announcement the companies said the transaction was expected to close in the second half of 2025.
Hornetsecurity brings a sizable channel business and a multi-tenant platform purpose-built for Microsoft 365 protection. Company metrics cited around the deal highlighted recurring revenue north of $160 million, year-over-year growth in the double digits, and a partner network that reaches thousands of MSPs and more than 125,000 customers worldwide—attributes that helped position the firm as a logical complement to Proofpoint’s enterprise heritage.
Executives from both companies presented the acquisition as complementary rather than consolidatory: Proofpoint gains a delivery model and product set tailored to MSPs and SMBs, while Hornetsecurity gains access to broader threat intelligence and scale that could accelerate product development. Hornetsecurity’s leadership was reported to remain in place, with management continuing to run day-to-day operations through the integration period.
Now that the calendar has moved into the second half of 2025—with regulatory reviews and customary closing conditions still outstanding—the transaction is entering its critical execution phase. Observers will be watching whether the combined group can translate complementary technology and channel reach into faster innovation and simpler delivery for MSPs and smaller customers, or whether the practical work of integrating platforms, go-to-market models and partner programs tempers near-term benefits.
