Who Guardian Life is.
- Historical Background
- Guardian Life was established in Manhattan in 1860, originally under the name Germania Life Insurance Company. The company was founded by Hugo Wesendonck, a German civil rights lawyer who fled to the United States after the 1848-49 revolution in Europe. It was started with funds from other German refugees. In response to anti-German sentiment during World War I, the company was renamed The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in 1918.
- Source of Capital
- As a mutual insurance company, Guardian Life is owned by its policyholders. Capital is generated through the sale of insurance policies and other financial products to individuals and businesses. Profits can be returned to whole life policyholders in the form of annual dividends.
