Volund Manufacturing is a Huntington Beach, California propulsion startup building low-cost, MIL-SPEC gas-turbine engines and vertically integrated automated manufacturing for attritable unmanned aerial systems—cruise missiles, collaborative combat aircraft and reconnaissance drones—where propulsion is a limiting factor for affordable mass. Founded in 2025 by CEO Eric Hostetler (ex-Anduril, Oakley, Apple), CTO Steven Stanley (ex-Aerojet Rocketdyne, Blue Origin), Chief Manufacturing Officer Ken Spaulding (precision machining) and COO James Sonntag, Volund runs a roughly 5,500 sq ft facility with a digital thread across PLM, ERP and a bespoke manufacturing execution system so design changes flow to the factory floor without heavy back-office rework. After an undisclosed 2025 pre-seed from First In, Cyrus Ventures and Marlinspike, Volund raised $12 million in seed funding in June 2026 led by Root Ventures and Squadra, with Output Capital, Marlinspike, Alpha Delta Ventures and First In, to scale R&D and engineering toward prototype engines flying with integrators in early 2027 and production ramps into hundreds of engines per year.
