Marketing · Baltimore, United States · Founded 2007
Videology operated as a software provider focused on converged television and video advertising. The company was founded in 2007 by Scott Ferber, who previously co-founded Advertising.com. Initially established as Tidal TV in Baltimore, the company aimed to develop software for streaming television content online, launching a free TV-watching site in 2008. Ferber's background in utilizing mathematics and technology to build businesses shaped the company's direction. His experience at Advertising.com, which was sold to AOL in 2004, provided a foundation for his venture into the video advertising space.
The business pivoted and rebranded to Videology in 2012, shifting its focus to developing software that enabled advertisers and media companies to target specific demographics across digital video and TV. The platform used algorithms and analytics to manage, measure, and optimize advertising campaigns. Its business model was a combination of software licensing fees and receiving a percentage of the advertising spend managed through its platform. Videology served marketers and media companies by providing them with tools for advertising analytics, revenue optimization, and campaign management, aiming to bring the efficiency of programmatic advertising to the TV and premium video markets. Over the years, Videology expanded its operations globally, reaching 28 countries by 2014, and made strategic acquisitions, including advertising marketplace LucidMedia and data management company Collider in 2012.
Despite raising over $120 million in funding and forming key partnerships, such as with Mediaocean and Nielsen, Videology faced business struggles. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2018. Subsequently, in August 2018, Amobee, a subsidiary of Singtel, acquired Videology's assets for approximately $101 million. This acquisition integrated Videology's technology and intellectual property into Amobee's omni-channel platform, combining TV, social, and digital advertising capabilities. Scott Ferber joined Amobee as its Chief Innovation Officer following the acquisition.
