The company operates on a subscription-based model, famously offering unlimited monthly tutoring in subjects like Math, English, and Science for a flat fee, a disruptive pricing strategy at the time. This model was designed to make academic support more accessible and affordable compared to the high hourly rates of traditional personal tutors in the US. A major turning point came in 2009 when Pearson, a global education company, acquired a minority stake, which was increased to a controlling 76% in 2011 for approximately $127 million. Pearson completed the 100% acquisition in 2013, at which point the founders exited their management roles.
