Tongcheng Life
A new type of e-commerce platform dedicated to serving the big scene of household consumption, providing fresh food and food materials
About Tongcheng Life
Tongcheng Life, operating under its parent company Suzhou Fresh Orange Technology Co., Ltd., was a significant player in China's community e-commerce sector. Founded in 2018, the startup was the brainchild of He Pengyu, who previously served as a senior VP at the online travel agency LY.com, and Yin Xiang, the co-founder of the fresh produce e-commerce brand Qianxianhui. The company was notably incubated and supported by the Hong Kong-listed online travel agency Tongcheng-Elong.
The firm operated a community group-buying model, a business strategy that gained immense popularity in China, particularly during the pandemic. This model involved customers, often within the same residential community, placing bulk orders for groceries and daily essentials through a WeChat mini-program. Tongcheng Life would then deliver the aggregated orders to designated community sales offices or smart lockers for customer pickup, a system that facilitated contactless delivery. The company's revenue was generated by connecting upstream suppliers directly with downstream communities, which improved distribution efficiency and reduced costs for consumers. Its product offerings were heavily focused on fresh agricultural products, which accounted for up to 70% of its total sales, supplemented by food, daily necessities, and other home supplies.
Tongcheng Life experienced rapid growth, completing four funding rounds in 2019 alone and securing a substantial $200 million in a Series C round in June 2020. This round was co-led by the social media platform Joyy Inc. and saw participation from prominent investors like Legend Capital, GSR Ventures, and Bertelsmann Asia Investments. However, the competitive landscape of community group buying intensified dramatically as major tech companies like Meituan and Pinduoduo entered the market, leading to aggressive price wars and a race for market share fueled by heavy capital investment. Despite its initial success and significant venture capital backing totaling over $300 million, Tongcheng Life struggled to compete with these deep-pocketed giants. In July 2021, after a brief rebranding attempt to Micheng Life, the company announced it was filing for bankruptcy, citing poor management and the challenging business environment.
