Scientific instruments, diagnostics, and life sciences services. MoreLess
If you work in a lab, a hospital, or a biotech company, you probably can't get through your day without using a product from Thermo Fisher Scientific. They are the Amazon of the science world, a massive company that provides everything from basic lab supplies to complex analytical instruments and outsourced drug development services. But this giant wasn't built overnight; it's the result of a blockbuster merger between two very different, yet complementary, companies. The story starts on two separate tracks. First, there's Fisher Scientific, founded in 1902 by a 20-year-old engineering graduate from Pittsburgh, Chester G. Fisher. He saw a need to supply the labs of burgeoning industries like steel and created a one-stop shop for scientific tools. Fisher essentially became the definitive catalog and distributor for labs across North America. Decades later, in 1956, Greek immigrant and MIT PhD George Hatsopoulos co-founded Thermo Electron with Peter Nomikos. While Fisher was about distribution, Thermo Electron was about invention. Hatsopoulos was a brilliant engineer focused on applying thermodynamics to create new instruments and technologies. For 50 years, both companies grew independently. Fisher expanded its distribution network, went public in 1965, and became a staple in labs everywhere. Thermo Electron, driven by Hatsopoulos's innovative spirit, developed cutting-edge analytical instruments. The defining moment came in 2006, when the two companies announced a massive $10.6 billion merger. The deal combined Thermo's high-tech instruments with Fisher's vast distribution channels, creating the powerhouse we know today as Thermo Fisher Scientific. Since the merger, the company has been on an acquisition spree, buying dozens of companies to expand its reach into genomics, specialty diagnostics, and biopharma services, including major acquisitions like Life Technologies in 2013 and PPD in 2021. Today, Thermo Fisher Scientific is a dominant force in serving science, a nearly essential partner in global research and healthcare.
