About SpotX
SpotX (formerly SpotXchange) was a Denver, Colorado-based video advertising platform that provided media owners with ad serving and programmatic tools to monetize video inventory across desktop, mobile, connected TV (CTV) and over-the-top (OTT) environments. Co-founded by Mike Shehan, who served as CEO, and Steve Swoboda, COO/CFO, the company built a sell-side platform combining modern ad serving, programmatic infrastructure, and formats such as outstream video. It gave publishers control, transparency and insight into buyer behavior, access and pricing in order to maximize revenue. Its clients included broadcasters, MVPDs, premium publishers, app developers, OTT services and CTV platforms, such as Sling TV, Pluto TV, Vevo and RTL Nederland. SpotX operated offices across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. In 2014, RTL Group acquired a 65% majority stake, marking the broadcaster's first major move into advertising technology. In 2017, RTL Group bought the remaining shares at an enterprise value of $404 million. In February 2021, Magnite agreed to acquire SpotX from RTL Group for $1.17 billion in cash and stock. The deal closed on April 30, 2021, for approximately $1.14 billion, creating what Magnite described as the largest independent CTV and video advertising platform as TV budgets shift from linear to digital. SpotX now operates as part of Magnite.
