Semantic Machines

Semantic Machines, founded in 2014, operated at the forefront of conversational artificial intelligence before its acquisition by Microsoft in May 2018. The company was established by a team of distinguished figures in AI and serial entrepreneurs, including CEO Daniel Roth, who previously founded and sold Voice Signal Technologies to Nuance and Shaser BioScience to Spectrum Brands. The founding team also included CTO Larry Gillick, former Chief Speech Scientist for Apple's Siri; Chief Scientist Dan Klein, a professor of computer science at UC Berkeley; and lead scientist Percy Liang, a computer science professor at Stanford. This convergence of entrepreneurial and academic expertise aimed to solve a core challenge in human-computer interaction: moving beyond simple command-and-response to enable genuine, contextual conversations.

The company's core mission was to develop a next-generation technology platform that could understand the nuances of multi-turn dialogues, maintain context, and allow users to interact with services more naturally. Unlike existing digital assistants that primarily processed isolated commands, Semantic Machines' technology was designed to comprehend the flow of a conversation. Their main offering, the Conversation Engine, utilized machine learning to extract semantic intent from text or voice, creating a self-updating framework to manage dialogue context and user goals. This approach allows for the dynamic composition of atomic actions, enabling the system to handle complex, multi-step requests by combining simple, known capabilities in new ways. Before the acquisition, Semantic Machines had raised approximately $20.9 million from investors, including Bain Capital Ventures and General Catalyst, and was piloting its technology with large-scale enterprises.

Following the acquisition by Microsoft for an undisclosed sum, the Semantic Machines team and its technology were integrated to enhance Microsoft's AI products, such as Cortana, Azure Bot Service, and Microsoft Cognitive Services. Microsoft established a conversational AI center of excellence in Berkeley, California, built around the acquired team to continue pushing the boundaries of language interfaces. The technology has since been integrated into products like Microsoft Outlook Mobile, allowing users to manage their calendars through conversational interactions.
