Ricult operates at the intersection of financial and agricultural technology, aiming to rectify inefficiencies within the agricultural value chains of developing nations. The company was founded in 2016 by four MIT alumni: Aukrit Unahalekhaka, Usman Javaid, Jonathan Stoller, and Gabriel Torres. The enterprise provides a digital platform that leverages artificial intelligence, machine learning, and satellite imagery to offer a suite of services. For farmers, Ricult provides crucial data-driven insights for crop management, including weather forecasting and pest warnings, which helps to increase crop yields and reduce risks. This data is also used to create a unique credit score for farmers, enabling financial institutions to offer them affordable loans and credit, a service they have historically been denied due to a lack of financial history. The business model targets several stakeholders within the agricultural ecosystem. It serves smallholder farmers directly with its mobile application, while also partnering with banks, credit agencies, and large agri-businesses like sugar mills and fertilizer companies. These larger entities pay for access to Ricult's platform to manage their supply chains, assess farmer creditworthiness, and gain insights into crop procurement. The company has successfully established operations in Thailand and Pakistan, with a user base that has grown to encompass hundreds of thousands of farmers.
