Oyster Financial
Digital Banking for Freelancers, SMB's in Spanish speaking LATAM
About Oyster Financial
Oyster Financial emerged in September 2018 as a neobank targeting the underserved market of freelancers, startups, and small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Mexico. The company was co-founded by Vilash Poovala, a Silicon Valley-based serial entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in fintech, and Gabriel Leon, who possesses extensive experience in the payments sector with companies like Mercado Pago, Clip, Amazon, and PayPal. Poovala's background includes roles as CPTO at PayU and Infinitec Solutions, and co-founding Clip, a major Latin American fintech, providing him with deep insights into the payment and business banking landscape.

The founders identified a significant pain point in the Mexican market: the bureaucratic and lengthy process for entrepreneurs to open a business bank account. Traditional banks in Mexico have historically focused on larger corporate clients, often neglecting the needs of SMBs, which constitute 95% of businesses and contribute significantly to the national GDP. Oyster Financial was created to address this gap by offering a digital-first solution. The company developed its own core banking platform, enabling businesses to open an account with a debit card in days instead of months. This strategy is focused on being a financial partner that understands and supports the business health of SMBs.
Oyster Financial's product suite is delivered through an app-based platform and is designed to streamline financial operations. Key services include a business bank account, a physical and virtual debit card for online and offline payments, bill payments, and fee-free fund transfers available 24/7. A significant differentiator is its credit offering; the company provides instant credit lines ranging from US$500 to US$1,500 upon account opening, with the potential for revolving credit lines up to US$5,000 for active customers. This was a novel offering among neobanks in Mexico. The platform also features payment links that can be integrated with CRM, ERP, and accounting software, automating various business processes. In November 2022, Oyster Financial was acquired by Yaydoo, a larger B2B payments fintech, in a move to consolidate and expand payment solutions across Latin America. As part of the acquisition, Vilash Poovala transitioned to the role of Chief Technology Officer at Yaydoo, leveraging his expertise to scale the combined company's technology.
