About Nima

Nima, founded in 2013 as 6SensorLabs, develops portable food sensors designed to provide consumers with data about their food, empowering those with food allergies and sensitivities. The company emerged from MIT, co-founded by Shireen Yates (CEO) and Scott Sundvor (Chief Product Officer). The founders' journey was deeply personal; Yates has multiple food allergies, and Sundvor was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, making both keenly aware of the challenges and anxieties of dining out. The idea crystallized for Yates at a wedding when a waitress's uncertain response about an appetizer's gluten content highlighted a critical consumer need.

The company's core business revolves around a portable, wedge-shaped sensor that utilizes antibody-based chemistry to detect specific proteins in food. Its first product, a gluten sensor, launched in 2017, followed by a peanut sensor in 2018. The business model involves the sale of the reusable sensor device and single-use test capsules required for each test. To operate, a user places a pea-sized food sample into a disposable capsule, inserts it into the sensor, and receives a result in under five minutes. The gluten sensor is calibrated to detect gluten at 20 parts per million (ppm), the FDA standard for "gluten-free," with a reported accuracy of over 97% compared to lab ELISA tests. However, the technology has limitations and cannot detect gluten in fermented or hydrolyzed foods like soy sauce and beer.

A companion mobile app for iOS and Android connects to the sensor via Bluetooth, allowing users to log test results and contribute to a community-sourced database of restaurant and packaged food information. This creates a network effect, providing greater value as more people test and share data. In 2020, Medline Industries acquired Nima. Subsequently, Medline spun out the company, which rebranded as Nima Partners. After experiencing product shortages, Nima Partners announced a relaunch in 2025 with new funding, with plans to introduce a subscription model and pursue insurance coverage to improve accessibility.
