Luminous Robotics, Inc. is a Boston-based robotics and AI company focused on accelerating the construction of renewable energy infrastructure. Founded in August 2023 by CEO Jay M. Wong, the company aims to solve labor and logistics bottlenecks in the solar industry. The founding team includes veterans from NASA, Stanford, MIT, and Softbank Robotics. The company's core product is LUMI, an AI-powered robotic system designed to automate the installation of solar panels on utility-scale farms. LUMI is a mobile, tracked robot that uses computer vision and AI to pick up and place solar modules onto racking structures, a task that is traditionally labor-intensive. The system is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing construction workflows without requiring process alterations, helping work crews install panels up to 3.5 times faster and reducing manual heavy lifting. The latest iteration, LUMI Series 3, weighs 3,750 pounds and can operate for 10-15 hours continuously, handling modules up to 100 pounds.

Luminous operates by deploying fleets of its LUMI robots to solar construction sites, serving major solar developers, construction companies, and mechanical installers. The company's business model centers on providing this robotic fleet as a service to accelerate build times and enhance worker safety. The company developed and shipped its first prototype, which installed a solar farm in Virginia, within 10 weeks of its founding. In July 2025, Luminous secured $4.8 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) as the first recipient of the $100 million Solar Scaleup Challenge. This funding supports the company's first global deployment of a full fleet of five LUMI robots in Australia, in partnership with engineering firm Equans.
