Q-Bot

Q-Bot is a London-based company founded in 2012 by Mathew Holloway, Tom Lipinski, and Professor Peter Childs, developing robotic solutions for the construction industry. The idea originated from a difficult retrofit project, leading the founders to envision a way to install insulation in tight spaces without extensive disruption. Holloway, the CEO, has a background in Innovation and Engineering Design and leads the company's strategy and fundraising. Lipinski, the Chief Scientific Officer, is an expert in building physics with a degree from Cambridge University and focuses on research, development, and new markets. The company's core offering is a robotic system that applies underfloor insulation in buildings with suspended timber floors, a common feature in the UK's older housing stock. The process involves deploying a small robot through an air vent into the void beneath the floorboards. This robot then surveys the area, and sprays layers of insulation onto the underside of the floor, which significantly reduces heat loss and drafts. This method avoids the need to remove floorboards, making the installation process faster, less disruptive, and more cost-effective than traditional methods. An installation typically takes one to two days. The system is designed to improve a home's energy efficiency, with studies showing it can reduce heat loss through the floor by up to 79% and lower annual heating bills. It can also increase a property's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) score.Q-Bot operates on a 'Robot-as-a-Service' (RaaS) model, partnering with accredited installation companies, social and private landlords, and homeowners. This model allows Q-Bot to scale its operations by training and supplying its technology to local partners in the UK and internationally, including France. The company has secured $14.5 million in funding over 13 rounds from investors such as EMV Capital. Q-Bot's technology has received numerous awards, including a prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category in 2020.
