GMI collaborates with a range of partners, including academic research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, government bodies, and healthcare providers. Its business model appears to be centered on providing this valuable genomic data to pharmaceutical companies for a period of exclusivity to aid in drug discovery, after which the data may be licensed for broader research. This approach allows for the development of novel therapeutic drugs and diagnostics.

A significant milestone in the company's history occurred in October 2016, when it secured $40 million in a Series A funding round. This investment came from prominent international investors, including the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF), ARCH Venture Partners, Polaris Partners, and GV (formerly Google Ventures). In November 2018, GMI was acquired by WuXi NextCODE, a global genomics technology company, for an undisclosed sum, becoming a subsidiary of the firm. This acquisition was part of a larger investment program of up to $400 million aimed at establishing Ireland as a global hub for genomics research. The company was later known as Genuity Science Ireland.
