About Elixir Pharmaceuticals

Elixir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was a US-based biotechnology firm founded in 1999, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company is no longer in operation. It concentrated its efforts on the discovery, development, and commercialization of pharmaceuticals for metabolic conditions, particularly diabetes and obesity. The firm's scientific foundation was built upon aging research, positing that the genetic pathways controlling longevity could be targeted to treat or prevent age-related diseases.

The company's product pipeline included small molecule drugs designed to mimic the body's natural longevity responses. Key programs involved the development of ghrelin antagonists for type 2 diabetes and ghrelin agonists for metabolic disorders. One of its product candidates for type 2 diabetes was known as Glufast®. Elixir's operational model involved leveraging its internal expertise in the biology of aging to identify novel drug targets and then forming strategic partnerships to advance its programs. A notable collaboration was a multi-year agreement with Evotec OAI for a range of drug discovery and development services, from medicinal chemistry to high-throughput screening.

Elixir Pharmaceuticals secured significant venture capital investment to fund its research and clinical activities. In November 2006, the company raised $46 million through a Series C equity and venture debt financing. This was followed by a $12 million Series D round in May 2009, bringing its total funding to $58 million. Investors included prominent firms such as MPM Capital, ARCH Venture Partners, Oxford Bioscience Partners, and Physic Ventures. In a major corporate milestone, Elixir entered into an agreement with Novartis in May 2009. This deal granted Novartis an exclusive option to acquire Elixir for a potential value exceeding $500 million, contingent upon the successful completion of a Phase 2a clinical study for its primary oral ghrelin antagonist.
