Raziel Therapeutics is focused on developing a proprietary, injectable new chemical entity called RZL-012 (Tapencarium) for aesthetic and therapeutic applications involving localized fat reduction. The business model centers on the clinical development and subsequent commercialization of RZL-012 through strategic partnerships and licensing agreements. A significant milestone was the 2020 licensing deal with Fosun Pharma, granting exclusive rights to develop and commercialize RZL-012 in Greater China for treating submental fat, commonly known as a double chin. This agreement involves substantial milestone payments and future royalties. The company also has a collaboration with 365mc to advance clinical development in South Korea.

The company's lead product, RZL-012, is a first-in-class small molecule designed to be administered via a single session of multiple subcutaneous injections directly into unwanted fat deposits. Its mechanism of action involves the physical destruction of fat cell membranes, a process known as necrosis, leading to the death of adipocytes at the injection site. This triggers a natural inflammatory and healing process where the dead fat cells are cleared and replaced by fibrotic tissue, resulting in a contraction of the area and a long-term, sustained reduction in fat volume. This targeted approach differentiates it from systemic metabolic treatments.

Raziel is advancing RZL-012 through multiple clinical trials for several indications. A primary aesthetic application is the reduction of submental fat, for which Phase 3 trials have been initiated in China with a projected market launch in 2027. The drug is also being evaluated for body contouring, such as reducing flank fat, and for therapeutic uses. Notably, the FDA granted RZL-012 an orphan drug designation for Dercum's disease, a rare condition characterized by painful fatty deposits called lipomas. Clinical studies have shown RZL-012 can significantly reduce pain associated with these lipomas.
