ElevationSpace Inc. is a Japanese space-tech startup established in February 2021 as a spin-off from Tohoku University. The company was co-founded by CEO Ryohei Kobayashi and CTO Toshinori Kuwahara. Kobayashi, who studied space architecture, leads the company with a vision conceived during his time at the university. Kuwahara is a professor at Tohoku University and a specialist in small satellite development. The management team also includes COO Kazunari Miyamaru and CFO Hiroshi Imakubo.

ElevationSpace is developing services to address the upcoming decommissioning of the International Space Station (ISS) in 2030, which will create a gap in space environment utilization. The firm's core offerings are the "ELS-R" and "ELS-RS" platforms. ELS-R is an uncrewed, reusable small satellite service that enables in-orbit research, development, and manufacturing in a microgravity environment, with the capability to return materials and results to Earth. This service provides a more frequent, cost-effective, and flexible alternative to experiments on the ISS. The ELS-RS is a high-frequency cargo return service designed to retrieve payloads from crewed space stations. Leveraging Japan's expertise in atmospheric re-entry technology, these platforms are designed to provide a reliable two-way transportation system between orbit and the ground.

The company's business model centers on providing these space transportation and experimentation services to a range of clients, including private companies and research institutions that need access to microgravity environments. The first major project is the "AOBA" satellite, Japan's first commercial re-entry satellite, scheduled for launch from late 2026. This 220kg-class satellite will carry experimental payloads from various companies, conduct in-orbit experiments, and then return to Earth. As of September 2025, ElevationSpace had raised a total of 3.7 billion yen (approximately $3.7B USD) through multiple funding rounds, including a pre-series B round, to accelerate the development of its platforms and the production of the "Aoba" flight model.
