Edmodo

Edmodo was an educational technology company that provided a communication, collaboration, and coaching platform for K-12 schools and teachers. Founded in 2008 by Nicolas Borg, Jeff O'Hara, and Crystal Hutter, the company aimed to create a secure and easy-to-use social learning network that mirrored the functionality of platforms like Facebook but was tailored for the educational environment. Borg and O'Hara, who had experience working in the IT departments of school districts, recognized the need for a dedicated tool that could facilitate communication between teachers, students, and parents. Their direct experience with the inefficiencies in school communication systems directly informed the development of Edmodo's core features.

The platform operated on a freemium model, offering its core social learning tools free of charge to individual teachers and students, which was instrumental in its rapid, global adoption. Edmodo's primary clients were K-12 educators, schools, and entire school districts. The business generated revenue through premium, paid features and services offered to schools and districts, such as Edmodo Snapshot, a tool for standards-aligned assessments, and professional development resources. The platform's key service was a private microblogging network where teachers could create virtual classrooms, share educational content, distribute quizzes and assignments, and communicate with students in a monitored environment. It also facilitated professional collaboration among educators through subject and interest-based communities. A significant feature was the ability for parents to gain read-only access to their children's classroom activities and grades, enhancing the home-school connection.

Over its lifespan, Edmodo achieved significant scale, connecting millions of educators, students, and parents worldwide. The company secured substantial venture capital funding, raising over $77 million across several rounds from prominent investors including Benchmark, Greylock Partners, and Accel Partners, which fueled its expansion. Despite its large user base, the company faced challenges in monetization. In 2018, Edmodo was acquired by the Chinese gaming and technology company NetDragon Websoft for $137.5 million. Following the acquisition, Edmodo continued its operations but ultimately announced it would be shutting down its services. On September 22, 2022, the Edmodo platform ceased operations, marking the end of its fourteen-year journey in the edtech space.
