The company was founded by a team from Flagship Pioneering, including Stéphane Budel, who also served as the founding President and later CEO. Cygnal's core business revolves around developing a new class of medicines to stimulate nerve-driven repair mechanisms. The company has developed the Exoneural Medicine Platform, a proprietary system designed to understand and modulate the signaling between the peripheral nervous system and non-neural cells. This platform integrates single-cell and neuronal genomics, advanced imaging, and bioinformatics to identify novel drug targets and develop therapeutics. This strategic move provided Cygnal's programs with the resources and clinical development expertise of Cullinan to advance its novel drug candidates. Prior to the acquisition, Cygnal operated primarily in a research and development capacity, having not yet brought a product to market.
