The idea for CodeSandbox emerged from van Hoorne's frustration with the difficulty of sharing code examples with dependencies while working on a project for Catawiki. This led them to create a platform that simplifies the entire development workflow, from prototyping to deployment.

The platform's core offering is a high-performance cloud development environment that provisions fresh virtual machines in under three seconds and can resume them in under two seconds using a unique memory snapshotting technology. It is designed for both individual developers and teams, as well as for programmatic code execution at scale, such as for AI agents. CodeSandbox serves a wide range of clients, from individual developers and open-source projects to large organizations like Microsoft, Shopify, and Atlassian. Its business model operates on a freemium basis, providing free access for open-source projects and individual sandboxing, while offering paid plans like "Team Pro" and "Enterprise" for teams requiring advanced features such as private repositories, centralized billing, and enhanced security. The enterprise solution offers flexible deployments, including cloud, private cloud, and managed on-premise options with usage-based billing.

CodeSandbox provides a feature-rich online editor that supports numerous frameworks and languages, including React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, and Node.js. Key features include real-time collaboration, GitHub integration for committing and creating pull requests, pre-configured templates, integrated DevTools for task automation, and direct deployment to hosting services like Vercel and Netlify. The platform also supports Dev Containers, allowing for customizable development environments. In December 2024, CodeSandbox was acquired by Together AI, a move intended to integrate its code interpreter technology into Together AI's development platform. Before the acquisition, CodeSandbox had raised a total of $15.2 million over two funding rounds, including a $12.8 million Series A in October 2020 led by EQT Ventures, with participation from Kleiner Perkins and Arches Capital.
