Carbonfact

Carbonfact is a carbon management software platform designed specifically for the apparel, footwear, and textile industries. Founded in 2021 by Marc Laurent, Martin Daniel, and Romain Champourlier, the Paris-based company aims to help fashion brands measure, report, and reduce their environmental emissions to align with global climate targets. The founding team combines expertise from different sectors: Marc Laurent was a venture capitalist who co-founded Kerala Ventures; Martin Daniel has a background in data science with experience at Google and Airbnb; and Romain Champourlier is a software engineer who previously worked at JobTeaser. The company is a graduate of Y Combinator's Summer 2021 batch.

Carbonfact provides a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform that automates the complex process of carbon accounting and conducting Life-Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for fashion products. The software integrates with a company's existing systems, like PLMs and ERPs, or uses simple data exports to pull information on bills of materials, purchase orders, and supply chains. Its technology cleans, structures, and enriches this data, using machine learning to fill in gaps and calculate cradle-to-grave environmental impacts for each product SKU. This allows brands to get a detailed view of their emissions at a product and corporate level, covering all 16 environmental indicators of the PEFCR methodology, not just carbon.

The business model is centered on providing this data-driven platform to fashion companies, helping them navigate increasing regulatory pressure, such as the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Clients can use the platform's simulation tools to model how changes in design, materials, or suppliers could reduce their environmental footprint before production begins. The platform serves a range of customers, from large established brands like Columbia, New Balance, and Carhartt to other players in the fashion ecosystem like A.P.C. and Allbirds. Carbonfact has raised a total of $17.1 million over four funding rounds, including a $15 million Series A in April 2024 led by Alven with participation from Headline and Y Combinator.
