AutoNavi Holdings Ltd., also known as Gaode in China, operates as a prominent Chinese provider of digital map content, navigation, and location-based solutions. Founded in 2002 by Congwu Cheng, Jun Hou, and Jun Xiao, the company initially focused on developing digital map data for in-car navigation systems. A significant milestone was achieved in 2010 when AutoNavi became a publicly listed company on the NASDAQ global select market under the ticker AMAP.

In April 2014, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group acquired AutoNavi for approximately $1.5 billion, turning it into a wholly-owned subsidiary. This acquisition followed an initial investment in 2013 where Alibaba purchased a 28% stake for $294 million, becoming the largest shareholder. The full acquisition was aimed at integrating AutoNavi's mapping and navigation capabilities into Alibaba's expanding ecosystem, particularly to bolster its online-to-offline (O2O) commerce strategies. Following the acquisition, AutoNavi was delisted from the NASDAQ.

AutoNavi's business model leverages a "freemium" approach, providing robust basic mapping and navigation services for free to attract a large user base, while generating revenue through value-added services. Its income streams are diversified and include fees for API calls from corporate clients, advertising, and commissions from its aggregated ride-hailing service which connects users with multiple ride-sharing providers. The company's core product, the Amap mobile application, offers precise positioning, route planning, real-time traffic updates, and voice navigation. The service extends beyond simple navigation to include a comprehensive location-based service platform, integrating functionalities such as searching for points-of-interest, restaurant reviews, and booking taxis. AutoNavi's extensive digital map database, covering millions of kilometers of roadways and points of interest, is a key asset. The company also serves as a crucial data provider for other major technology companies, including Apple Maps in China.
