About Atlas Data Storage

Atlas Data Storage, spun out from Twist Bioscience in May 2025, is a technology firm positioned to address the escalating demand for long-term data archiving. The company was established with a significant $155 million seed financing round from investors including ARCH Venture Partners, Bezos Expeditions, and In-Q-Tel, among others. This financial backing is intended to expand operations and accelerate the commercialization of its DNA-based data storage solutions.

The leadership team is a blend of data storage industry veterans and synthetic biology experts. Varun Mehta, who previously co-founded Nimble Storage (acquired by Hewlett Packard), serves as CEO. Bill Banyai, a co-founder of Twist Bioscience, brings his expertise in DNA synthesis to his role as Founder and CTO of Atlas. The executive team is rounded out by George Kadifa as Executive Chairman, who has held management positions at Oracle and IBM.

Atlas Data Storage is developing end-to-end solutions that encode binary data into the four-base nucleotide sequence of synthetic DNA (A, C, G, T). This method capitalizes on DNA's natural properties of extreme data density, durability potentially lasting over a thousand years, and scalability. The core technology, licensed from Twist Bioscience, involves a proprietary silicon-based semiconductor platform that miniaturizes the chemistry for DNA synthesis, enabling massively parallel chemistry on a chip. Data is stored as a dry powder in ruggedized steel capsules, making it secure, air-gapped, and easy to transport.

The company's business model is centered on providing these data storage products as a service to enterprise-scale clients. Target markets include hyperscalers, government agencies, and industries with long-term archival needs such as media and entertainment, scientific research, and regulated sectors like finance and healthcare. In December 2025, the company launched its first commercial service, Atlas Eon 100, a scalable offering designed for permanent data preservation. This service aims to provide a more sustainable and lower-maintenance alternative to traditional archival media, which requires periodic migration and controlled environments.
