Proxima Fusion Unveils Open-Source Fusion Plant Design

Proxima Fusion, has published the first open-source design for a commercial nuclear fusion plant, marking a potential breakthrough in clean energy. The company, spun out of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma PhysicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, unveiled its Stellarator-based fusion plant in the journal Fusion Engineering and Design . Unlike traditional nuclear fission, fusion produces massive energy with no carbon emissions and minimal radiation.

The Stellarator design differs from the more common Tokamak reactors by using only external magnets to sustain fusion, making it more stable and capable of continuous operation. MIT fusion expert Dennis Whyte called the publication the most significant advancement in fusion since the Tokamak breakthrough a decade ago.

Proxima Fusion has recruited engineers from Google X, SpaceX, and McLaren Racing and plans to launch its Alpha pilot plant by 2031 and a commercial fusion plant in the 2030s.
