Naarea and Thorizon team up on molten salt reactors

Naarea, a French company established in November 2021, and Thorizon, a Dutch firm spun off from NRG, have partnered to advance Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology in Europe. MSRs, known for using molten fluoride salts as coolant, offer a promising path to carbon-free energy, boasting advantages like operational safety and fuel flexibility. This partnership aims to pool resources, develop shared facilities, and enhance MSR technology's public and political support.

Naarea is developing the XSMR, an ultra-compact molten salt fast neutron reactor designed for diverse applications beyond traditional grid electricity, such as transportation and agriculture. Its compact size allows for deployment close to energy demand areas, enhancing security of supply. Thorizon's focus is on a larger, 250 MWt/100 MWe MSR targeted at industrial customers and utilities, featuring a unique cartridge-based core design for simplified fuel handling.

Together, Naarea and Thorizon aim to accelerate MSR development in Europe, leveraging modular design principles to ensure scalability and flexibility. This strategic collaboration underscores a mutual commitment to decarbonizing the planet by innovating in nuclear technology and recycling spent fuels, positioning Europe as a leader in advanced nuclear energy solutions.
