MGL raises $130M placement to fund cathode-material expansion
What's the deal? MGL New Materials has raised US$119.1M (roughly $130 million) through a private placement of shares to specific investors, after securing registration approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission. The company issued 59.7241 million shares at US$1.99 each to 15 subscribers, netting US$117.4M after expenses.
Who's in? Controlling shareholder Hengtong New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. took 13,793,100 shares under an 18-month lock-up. The remaining subscribers are subject to a 6-month lock-up.
What's the endgame? The placement funds MGL's previously announced 30,000-tonne-a-year cathode-material project, with US$101.2M earmarked for the first phase and the balance for working capital. That first phase is planned to add 15,000 tonnes of annual capacity in NCA and high-voltage lithium cobalt oxide, with ultra-high-nickel materials slated for a second phase.
Why now? The raise follows MGL's separate plan for a roughly US$412.5M LFP and iron-phosphate project in Sichuan. Together, the moves signal a broader push to expand across cathode chemistries.
What could go wrong? This is less a standalone financing milestone than a way to fund substantial capacity expansion. Whether that investment pays off will depend on execution and demand for the targeted materials.
The signal: MGL is betting capital upfront to build scale across multiple cathode types, positioning itself for an EV and battery-materials market that rewards capacity but punishes mistimed supply.
