Disc Medicine raises $486M after bitopertin Phase 3 win

What's the deal? Disc Medicine raised $485.9 million in net proceeds from an October public offering, days after its lead drug bitopertin met all primary and secondary endpoints in the pivotal Phase 3 APOLLO trial. The Watertown, Massachusetts biotech develops treatments for serious blood diseases.

Why now? The raise followed APOLLO's positive results in erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare disorder that causes severe pain from light exposure. The trial addressed the Food and Drug Administration's key concern from its February 2026 rejection: whether the drug improves outcomes patients feel, not just a biomarker.

By the numbers: Bitopertin cut whole-blood metal-free protoporphyrin IX by 41.4% versus placebo. Patients gained an average of 12.2 hours per month of pain-free time in sunlight during the sixth month of treatment, and all secondary endpoints were met.

What's the endgame? Disc plans to resubmit its New Drug Application by year-end, with an FDA decision expected by mid-2027. The $486 million offering, alongside its $682.8 million in cash at September 30, extends its runway into 2030 to fund a potential launch and its wider pipeline.

The quarter showed a net loss of $59.5 million, with $44.1 million in research spending and $20.1 million in general and administrative costs. The company is also advancing selcodebart for myelofibrosis-related anaemia and DISC-3405 for polycythaemia vera, with updated data due at the American Society of Hematology meeting in December.

What could go wrong? Approval is not guaranteed. The FDA review remains the decisive test, and the mid-2027 timing is Disc's own expectation, not a decision. Dizziness affected 50% of patients in the treatment group, though it was generally mild and transient.

The signal: The raise ranks in the 97th percentile of post-IPO equity rounds in US health, by deal size — an outsized bet on a clinical-stage name shifting toward commercial launch. It shows how a single pivotal readout can unlock the capital to fund it.
