Rex Innovation closes $242K seed round for low-cost hydrogen tech

What's the deal? South Korean energy deep-tech startup Rex InnovationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has closed a US$276.7K seed round led by Jeonnam Regional University Alliance Startup Technology Holdings. The company develops anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis components — catalysts, electrodes, and separators — to produce green hydrogen at lower cost.

What's the endgame? AEM electrolysis aims to combine the strengths of older alkaline systems and high-efficiency PEM systems. It uses a solid polymer membrane but can run on cheap non-precious-metal catalysts instead of platinum or iridium, potentially cutting equipment costs sharply. Rex Innovation, based in Naju, plans to use the money to move from the lab to product performance testing and to design mass-production infrastructure.

Why now? The company says it is converting five years of accumulated technology into its next growth stage. It is building out validation infrastructure and targeting large-scale field demonstrations in 2027, alongside a planned pre-Series A round.

What could go wrong? Durability is the sector's biggest hurdle. AEM materials degrade quickly in hot, strongly alkaline conditions, falling short of the thousands of operating hours commercial hydrogen plants require. Rex Innovation must still prove its materials can run long-term without voltage loss in real industrial settings, not just in-house tests.

The round is modest relative to the field. By amount, it sits in the bottom percentiles of comparable deals — a 0.323 score — reflecting its early stage rather than full commercialisation funding.

What's next? Rex Innovation is running a 500-hour durability test on a 50㎠-class electrode under a Jeonnam Technopark program, with results earmarked for patent filings and product certification. It is also developing a higher-performance catalyst through a Korea Electric PowerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → scale-up program.

Ichan-hee, chief executive officer of the lead investor, said the firm is "watching the growth potential" of energy deep-tech and "will review the possibility of follow-on investment" based on future results (translated from Korean).

The signal: Abroad, capital is already tied to industrialisation — Power to Hydrogen has raised more than $18 million and is exploring manufacturing ties with Asahi KaseiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. For Rex Innovation, the measure of success will be less about the size of its next round than about validated durability data and actual customer adoption. Its stated goal is a technology-based IPO by 2031.
