iFood's Zoop wins Visa, Mastercard nod to become card acquirer

What's the deal? Zoop, the fintech owned by Brazilian delivery giant iFood, has been authorised by Visa and MastercardDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to operate as a card acquirer. The move lets Zoop process card payments directly, cutting out intermediaries in its stack.

Why now? The shift follows Brazil's central bank Resolution 522, which sets new rules for marketplaces handling payments. The regulation pushes platforms to adopt clearer payment structures, creating an opening for Zoop to serve that segment directly.

What's the endgame? By becoming an acquirer, Zoop can reduce the number of players in card processing and widen the solutions it offers clients. The company built its acquirer stack using AI.

Zoop processed US$39.7B in total payment volume over the last 12 months, underscoring its scale as it moves to capture more of the payments chain.

The signal: As Brazil's central bank tightens rules around marketplace payments, infrastructure fintechs like Zoop are positioning to absorb functions once handled by third parties — consolidating the payments stack under fewer, larger players.
