Launch Africa backs South African water data startup Water Ledger Global

What's the deal? Water Ledger Global (WLG), a South African-founded water data startup, has secured a strategic investment from Launch Africa to scale its shared trust infrastructure for water globally.

What does it do? Founded in October 2024 by a South African team with roots in Australia dating to 2016, WLG runs Water Ledger, a platform that creates a single, trusted record of how much water exists, who uses it, and what it is worth. By breaking down data silos, it gives regulators, utilities, investors, and lenders a shared source of truth, aiming to turn water into a transparent, investable asset class.

Where it operates: WLG has subsidiaries in South Africa, Australia, and the US, and its technology is already live. Its SWaN solution for mitigation and nutrient markets runs in Virginia, while its water accounting and trading tool is used by SeqwaterDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the money for? The funding will help WLG take its platform to more utilities, regulators, water users, and markets.

Why now? "We backed the team because that record is what gives investors and lenders the confidence to put capital into water infrastructure," said Uwem Uwemakpan, head of investments at Launch Africa, who added that the platform meets a real need as the push for transparency and utility funding grows.

The signal: The deal lands amid rising African investor appetite for water and climate-resilience ventures — from Uganda's Irrisol Engineering to Egypt's NoorNationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s $30 million second close in July targeting early-stage climate ventures. WLG's backing shows that water data infrastructure, not just hardware, is drawing capital.
