Who's behind it? ATG SynBio Spain organised the summit with the Government of Navarra, regional development agency SODENA, CEIN and Polo IRIS. A pre-event on October 28 featured technical tours of the IRIS Biofoundry and networking.

What's on the agenda? The two-day conference at Baluarte covered strategic biomanufacturing, synthetic genomes, programmable biology, technology transfer, industrial fermentation and the circular bioeconomy. The stated aim is to make Navarra a hub for the international synthetic biology ecosystem.

Why now? The summit fits a broader European push to turn biotech research into domestic manufacturing. The EU's proposed Biotech Act and BioTechEU initiative target scale-up and financing gaps, while a 2026 EU bio-based innovation programme allocated €170.7 million for projects including biomanufacturing and biorefinery scale-up.

Navarra is building local capacity too. Its government announced a €2.5 million investment in a biofoundry, alongside an existing synthetic-biology lab and a regional network of more than 45 advanced-biotech companies.

The signal: The showcase matters as ecosystem-building and potential deal-making, but no funding or commercial outcomes were reported. It is evidence of ambition, not yet proof that the region can scale companies into industrial production.
