Adani takes full control of Mumbai's two-airport system with MIAL buyout

What's the deal? Adani Airport HoldingsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the operator running India's financial capital's airport system. The deal value was undisclosed.

Why it matters: This is not about one airport. Adani's control of MIAL carries control of Mumbai's emerging two-airport system, since MIAL holds a 74% stake in the new Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Why now? Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial operations on December 25, 2025, making the strategic link between the two airports operational. The takeover consolidates how capacity, investment, and traffic are allocated across the region.

What changes for airlines? MIAL has ordered select Gulf carriers to shift flights to Navi Mumbai from the summer 2027 season, as Mumbai's Terminal 1 is redeveloped. It said Mumbai's capacity would be cut by five million passengers a year; carriers that refuse must suspend services until the rebuilt terminal reopens in 2029.

What could go wrong? The shift has met resistance. Foreign airlines have sought more time and better coordination, highlighting the challenge of running the paired airports under one owner.

The signal: The deal deepens concentration in Indian aviation. Adani and GMRDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → together handled roughly 83% of passenger traffic at India's privately operated airports in 2025–26 — making control over who flies where, and from which terminal, an increasingly consolidated power.
