UK mutuals merge: Holloway Friendly completes Wiltshire tie-up, adds Whitehead to board
What's the deal? Holloway Friendly has appointed Wiltshire Friendly Society chairperson Caroline Whitehead as a non-executive director, following the two mutuals' merger. The Gloucester-based society completed the transfer of engagements with Wiltshire Friendly on October 1, 2026, after announcing the proposal in April.
Why now? The appointment follows the finalised merger, which Wiltshire Friendly members approved at the society's annual general meeting on June 23, 2026. Whitehead's board role gives Holloway Friendly a direct link to transferred members during integration.
What's the endgame? The merged business continues as Holloway Friendly, serving more than 33,000 members. The two societies described the deal as creating a "more resilient mutual" focused on income protection and member benefits.
Holloway Friendly said Whitehead brings experience in financial services alongside a background in marketing and communications. She chaired Wiltshire Friendly, whose chief executive Jon Gratland oversaw the merger vote.
For policyholders, little changes. Wiltshire Friendly members transfer to Holloway Friendly with no changes to their policies or insurance, no action required, and no job losses expected.
The signal: The tie-up reflects a broader consolidation trend among UK mutuals. OneFamilyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Scottish FriendlyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → have proposed combining in early 2027, a deal that could create a mutual with about 2.3 million members and nearly £10bn in assets. Whitehead's board seat is a modest governance step in a wider push to build scale.
