Monzo eyes $10B valuation in VC round as private equity talks stall
What's the deal? Monzo is exploring a venture capital fundraising round that would value the London-based digital bank at roughly £7.5bn, after talks with private equity firms over a minority stake sale stalled.
Why now? The move follows a failed £10bn takeover by Brazilian fintech Nubank, which collapsed over valuation. Monzo then pivoted to private equity, with Advent InternationalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, TPG, and CVC discussing a stake of up to 15% at an £8bn valuation — talks that have since broken down.
The bank, last valued at £4.5bn in a 2024 employee share sale, is seeking cash to fund European expansion. It launched in Spain last month and in Ireland, as new chief executive Diana Layfield steers growth toward Europe after closing Monzo's US operations.
What's the endgame? Layfield is diversifying revenue by building out lending and adding features such as mobile phone e-sims. Monzo has more than 16mn customers, almost all in the UK.
The group reported £87.3mn in pre-tax profit for the fiscal year to March 2026, up from £60.5mn a year earlier. Revenues rose 39% to £1.7bn.
What could go wrong? A venture round would deliver far less capital than a private equity deal, and board insiders had preferred a takeover or stake sale. One person said the board favoured those routes over a new raise.
The talks come at a tense time. Last year investors including Accel and Iconiq rebelled over the surprise exit of former chief executive TS Anil, demanding the chair's ouster and more board representation; Anil was reinstated as a non-executive director.
The signal: A £7.5bn target would sit well above Monzo's last formal valuation, in a UK fintech market where late-stage funding weakened sharply in early 2026. Securing investors near that figure would signal confidence despite the stalled sale — while rival Revolut, with 80mn customers, was reportedly valued at $115bn.
